HANDCRAFTED at her bench, Kate Ellen designs heirloom ethical rings made with and for LOVE.

Kate Ellen personally selects every stone, pulling antique diamonds and gemstones dating back to the early 1800's, each with their own fascinating and UNIQUE cut. Her stones are RARE; antique, sustainable...basically radical.

Her stones are graded and valued the same as modern diamonds but are more SUSTAINABLE; her gemstones are FAIR TRADE mined and cut by local artisans. Metal is recycled.

Each ring is INDIVIDUAL, your ring will be special to just you. Kate Ellen works with love, ARTISTIC vision and impeccable CRAFTSMANSHIP to create your HEIRLOOM.

...Kate Ellen is the lead designer and owner at Crown Nine Boutique, working in her lofted studio above the shop.

"Jewelry expression is part visual, part process. Making--quiet time at the bench is where I feel most contented. Fire, dirt, mess, and tools transform raw material into a beautiful object and ultimately into a symbol of love, unity, and dedication."

A Bay Area native, former teacher and social worker, she is committed to utilizing the most sustainable and ethical materials on the market and is a proud member Ethical Metalsmiths

Kate Ellen can be found at the shop most days, tinkering away at her bench and jamming out. P.S. You can call her Kate Ellen or Kate <3

How long does it take to make a ring?

  • In stock rings are ready to go! If it requires resizing it will take no longer than 1 week.
  • 1-5 weeks for A La Carte add ons (depending on style/options)
  • 6 weeks Fully Custom after design approval and payment. Usually we recommend giving yourself 2 full months.

Can I get my ring sooner?

Expedite service is $300, taken on a case-by-case basis. If you have a hard date (like a wedding!) please share that with us, we'll do our best.

Do you use recycled metals?

Yes. As members of Ethical Metalsmiths, we are dedicated to using only the most sustainable and ethical materials. We use 100% recycled metals whenever possible, and we are committed to limiting all waste.

What kinds of metals do you use?

We can do almost all styles in 14k, 18k, 22k gold in yellow, 14k gold in white or rose colors, as well as palladium and platinum. Sorry, we do not use silver for Vow jewelry, though Crown Nine does offer lots of pretty silver rings off the shelf made by over 25 independent artists.

What's the deal with your diamonds? Are they conflict free? Are they wrecking the environment?

After extensive research into best practices, we have chosen what we believe to be the most ethical sourcing methods. We use post consumer recycled diamonds with GIA or EGL grading report, available in old mine, old European, transitional, and modern cuts dating from the early 1800's to 1950's from a company that is audited and approved by SCS Global Services.

These stones are not involved in current human conflict, do not contribute to new mining projects and FAR SURPASS the standards of The Kimberly Process. Our diamonds also are not energy intensive like lab-created diamonds. If any re-cutting or polishing gets done, it gets done by real adults in the US who are true artisans and craftspeople. We are members of Ethical Metalsmiths and love to contribute to changing the world one ring at a time.

How do you select your diamonds?

Kate Ellen works directly with dealers who find antique diamonds and gemstones and she selects each stone with the utmost care, matching the stone to the spirit and integrity of the ring. All in stock rings have the diamond grade listed; for made-to-order rings we may adjust the price down if she finds a better deal for your ring, the price will never be adjusted up. For those who want to select their own stone, you can set up a Private Stone Viewing for $200--includes an in-person viewing of a handful of stones with Kate Ellen. Long-distance clients can opt for a remote viewing which includes two phones calls and viewing via photo and video combination.

Well what about your colored gemstones? They're a better option, right?

Kinda, sorta. Some colored gemstones are pretty sad. That's why we work with post consumer recycled and fair trade mined options. We also work directly with a gemstone cutter who travels directly to mine sites or first degree dealers and then cuts stones rough to look exquisite and totally unlike what you'll find anywhere else-- all with sustainability in mind. Result: beautiful stones that are one of a kind and ethically sourced. We can arrange a Private Stone Viewing for $200 --includes an in-person viewing of a handful of stones with Kate Ellen. Long-distance clients can opt for a remote viewing which includes two phones calls and viewing via photo and video combination.

How much does the labor cost compared to the materials?

Labor is included. We do not under any circumstances alter the price of artwork but are happy to make suggestions that are perfect for your budget.

Can I just purchase the mounting?

I have my own gold, can I use that?

Yes, for many designs we can use your gold or we can credit you for the weight. While it is more sustainable, it doesn't necessarily save a bunch of money as some of the processes to reuse gold are actually more labor intensive. We really encourage this more as a sentimental/ecological motivator rather than a budget one.

I have my own diamond/gemstone, can you set it for me?

No. Kate Ellen prides herself on choosing stunningly unique stones; we consider it part of the artwork. She is able to provide you with a Private Stone Viewing in which you can select your own stone from an assortment she arranges for you based on your desired budget and aesthetic.

How the hell do I figure out her/his ring size without letting on?

Tricky huh?! Maybe start with asking a friend or family member if they know. Bring a ring in to any jewelry shop and have them size it, or use this website to match. See if any ring fits well on one of your fingers and get that finger sized. Or just ask 'em to go to the jewelry store with you and get sized... kinda takes some of the fun out of it but at least it will be accurate.

Can you re-size the ring?

Every Vow ring is made with one free re-sizing included in the price, so yes. If a ring resizing requires a full remake due to incorrect size submission there will be a charge assessed. It pays to find the right size off the bat.

Do you do installment plans?

What about after I buy the ring?

We are happy to service your ring with refinishing and cleaning whenever you feel like it (we highly recommend getting engagement rings touched up before the big day). We suggest adding your ring to your renter or homeowner's insurance policy or buying a jewelry specific policy (Jeweler's Mutual is a cool option), getting a third party appraisal. We can provide you with the necessary paperwork and/or arrange a third party appraisal on your behalf.

What kind of paperwork do you provide?

  • Invoice with order details
  • GIA certificate
  • Pamphlet on insuring your ring
  • Information on jewelry care
  • We can arrange a third party appraisal on your behalf for $200 which is generally required by insurance companies

What if I have other burning questions?!

Just leave us a note below and we'll get back to you prontisimo, usually within 1-3 business days.
