ORIGINS // Solee Darrell

In this installment of ORIGINS, we sit down with our very own #crownninegirl Solee Darrell. Solee recently released her very first collection Califia which is mega swoon-worthy.  We're carrying a select number of pieces from the collection in the shop so come by and check them out!

Enjoy our chat! xo

C9: Why do you make art?

SD: This is a pretty complex question! I make art for many reasons but mainly because it makes me feel good. It's my form of meditation and I also love being able to leave the studio with something wearable that I can share with others.

C9: What themes are in your current work?

SD: My current line is really driven by shapes and repetitive patterns. I am always drawn to organic shapes and textures that take up space and that mimic traditional ethnic themes.

C9: How has your work changed over time?

SD:  I have only been working with metal for about a year so, I feel like I have just been experimenting and figuring out my voice. I've definitely embraced my organic nature which is a lot different from the pieces I made when I was learning which I felt had to be perfect and clean. Nothing I make is ever going to be perfect because I'm very human.

C9: Current obsessions?

SD: Froyo and The Legion of Honor

C9: mmmmm, froyo...

C9: Best piece of advice you have gotten?

SD: I've learned so much about life from working with jewelry- like patience- but Kate teaches me so much everyday. The one thing that she taught me about business and being an artist in general is that there is enough room in the sunlight for everyone and that there is no reason for any jealousy or unhealthy competition.  My parents have also always been my number one supporters and they have always instilled in me the idea that if there is something that you're interested in, take it seriously and go out into the world and make it happen.  All you have to do is ask for help and try as hard as you can.

C9: What artwork or artists influence your work?

SD: I'm very influenced by traditional tribal jewelry and garb. Anything with a pattern or anything oversized like traditional Indian silver pieces.

C9: How do you want someone to feel while wearing your work?

SD: I want them to feel powerful and protected and loved! I want them to know that when they go out in the world with one of my pieces they will be conversation starters.

C9: You put so much love into each of your pieces. It's truly amazing.

C9:  How do you know when a piece is finished?

SD: I am not a perfectionist so it really just depends on each piece. I always think about whether or not I would feel proud seeing it on someone else.

C9: What do you admire in other people?

SD: Work ethic, honesty, discipline, positivity and a fearless sense of style.

C9: Yas queen!

C9: What special talent would you choose if you could magically gain one?

SD: It would be cool if I could be book smart. Or maybe become a talented mathematician or if I could paint.

C9: What design are you most proud of/ sentimental/ moved by?

SD: The Throne ring was the inspiration for my whole collection and I still love it whenever I see it.
