Around Town with Christina // part 1

Kate Ellen assigned Solee and I the task of taking an afternoon to explore places in Oakland that we haven't been to before. It was pretty much the best task ever.  Enjoy part one of my afternoon around town. xo

First up, lunch at The Half Orange in Fruitvale.  I peeked at their menu beforehand and may or may not have drooled on my keyboard.

They also offer an impressive lineup of craft brews and brunch on weekends.

I went with a lunch combo- Portobello mushroom burger with a side salad, iced tea and an order of fries. because, fries.

It was all so good! Typically mushroom burgers can be pretty bland, but this one had a tangy basalmic vinegar marinade thing going on. Plus housemade pickles, lettuce, housemade THO sauce, grilled onions and I opted for swiss cheese. Many napkins were needed, btw.  The side salad was above and beyond a side salad. Strawberries, sesame seeds, marinated fennel and green goddess atop spring greens. SO GOOD. Fries were perfectly delicious and I'll be back as soon as I can.

What lunch dreams are made of...

Everyone needs to check this spot out. Super friendly staff, cozy inside seating and a cute patio. Go now!

In my dreamy burger fog/coma I ended up in Downtown at E.M. Wolfman General Interest Small Bookstore.

I really love bookstores- especially thoughtfully curated and interesting ones. The good folks at E.M. Wolfman did not disappoint. They have used books, small press books, zines, postcards, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

They also host performances and events. You can really feel that special stuff happens here.

Some rad art I saw along the way...

Next stop was Champion Sound Records. I pass this shop every night on my way home from work so I had to check it out.

One of the newest record shops in town, it hosts nice selection of new and used vinyl- both 12" and 45's.  It's the kind of spot where you can spend some time and talk shop for awhile. I chatted with Jacinta-one of the owners- and she and her boyfriend Donovan opened the space all but 3 months ago.

They're in the same block as The New Parish and The Rock Steady and host in-store events when there's a big show in town.

Stay tuned for part 2 next week!
